Chapter Six
“You look happy,” Trinity commented a few days later. “I think getting you away from New York is doing the trick.”
Anastasia looked up, surprised. She had been sipping her fruit juice, gazing over the railing at another gorgeous Mediterranean sunset. She hadn't been thinking of much of anything as she did it, but Trinity's words brought her up short.
“I suppose I am happy,” she said in surprise. “I know that I've never felt this relaxed before.”
“You could extend your visit,” Trinity suggested. “I have a small part in a Greek film that I’ll be shooting two weeks after we finish up this trip. I can always use the company when I'm on location and Apolo can't be with me.”
For a moment, Anastasia was tempted. She could put off the return to New York. With every day that passed, her life there felt more and more like a distant dream. She could follow her talented friend to a movie shoot, and perhaps, just perhaps, she could see more of Augustine. At the thought of her lover, she hesitated.
“I don't know,” she hedged. “There's…too much of a good thing, you know? I have a whole life waiting for me back in New York.”
Trinity dismissed her concerns with an airy wave.
“Your life is wherever you choose to make it,” she replied. “What are you so afraid of? That you might really be falling in love with Greece?”
Trinity was so close to hitting the mark that Anastasia felt a tremor of fear go through her. “I really couldn't say,” she said. “All I know is that I can't make a decision on anything after just a week or so. Do you know what I mean?”
Something about how she said that made Trinity take a closer look at her.
“Actually, I'm not sure that I do,” she said. “Ana, is there something wrong between you and Augustine?”
It didn't surprise Anastasia at all that Trinity had guessed about her affair with the Greek prince. Her friend had always been on the perceptive side, and it wasn't like she and Augustine had been subtle.
“Of course everything's fine,” she snapped, and then she clapped her hand over her mouth. That little burst of temper had likely told Trinity everything that she needed to know about what Anastasia had been feeling.
“All right, what's going on? You've been so happy lately, and now this. What are you hiding?”
“I'm not hiding anything,” Anastasia said firmly, wishing she were half as sure as she sounded. “I guess I'm just a little glum that my vacation's almost over and I have to go home.”
“But that's the thing,” Trinity said, puzzled. “I'm saying you don't have to…”
Anastasia forced a laugh. It sounded tinny and fake even to her ears.
“I have had an amazing time, but the truth is that I have always known that this wasn't going to be forever,” she said. “This is too much, and I knew it even when I was having a good time. No one can live like this. I have important things to be doing back in New York, initiatives that I left undone.
